About hygge
Hygge (pronounced Hoega) The Danish art of living, resembles 'our' coziness, although hygge goes further. Candles, hot drinks, big thick scarves, going into the forest and being kind to yourself are important elements.
I, Femke, am a big fan of the Danish concept of hygge. As described above, hygge is actually a way of life, where you take good care of yourself and enjoy the little things in life.
The internet is full of what hygge is, and for a while it was quite a buzzword (I also wrote a blog about it in 2018 and another one in 2022). Now the hype seems to be over and I feel like hygge can just be hygge again. Because in Denmark it really is the most normal thing in the world to advertise with 'hyggelige' socks 🙂
Hygge is not tied to a specific season, although it is easier to explain hygge for autumn and winter. Because then you light candles to make it light and cozy. Then you take nice walks in the forest that you end with a cup of hot chocolate, after which you sit on the couch with a blanket and read or crochet.
But hygge also plays a role in the lives of the Danes in spring and summer. Candles are still burning and fresh flowers are in a vase on the table. You have a nice picnic on a hyggelig blanket and you lie in the grass to look at the clouds or the stars. It can be that simple.
